ubuntu nepal repository logoNepal’s largest telecommunication company Nepal Telecom (NTC) has hosted the repositories for Linux based OS Ubuntu on its local server. NTC currently hosts the Youtube cache server in Nepal, resulting faster streaming on NTC ADSL subscribers and other ISP. Since the repository for Ubuntu is also hosted by NTC, updates, Ubuntu software and the Operating system can be downloaded faster than before.

ADSL  subscribers can download the updates, software, etc. from the local repository at the speed of 100 Kbps (average) in 192 kbps the internet. According to users of WorldLink, Sibisu  download speed is almost at 1mbps. The local repository of Ubuntu Nepal is located at : np.archive.ubuntu.com/ andnp.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntureleases/.

However for faster update, you need to edit the sources.list file in ubuntu and change http://us.archive.ubuntu.com to http://np.archive.ubuntu.com. As default installation has repository of US.

You can edit sources.lst by following method:

1. Open up Terminal pressing shortcut key Ctrl+Alt+T.
2. On terminal, type : sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list. It will ask for the password, enter your user account’s login password and press enter.
3. This will open text editor (gedit). Now, replace http://us.archive.ubuntu.com by http://np.archive.ubuntu.com and save the file by clicking on “Save” button. No changes are need for http://security.ubuntu.com/ leave them as they are.

Previously, Mercantile has hosted the  image file of Ubuntu in download.com.np, the download speed from download.com.np is also around 100kbps.

As per  my observation, NTC has local server for follow sites:
Microsoft.com
Java.com
Adobe.com
Intel Appup (appup.com)

Download speed from these sites are usually high.
