My Top 10 Must have applications for Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot

There are too many post on must have applications for Ubuntu Machine . Ubuntu 11.10 has already rocked on many linux lovers. For me the top 10 must have applications for Ubuntu linux are :

1. Install  ‘Ubuntu Restricted Extras’ Packages.

Firstly I installed some small but useful packages from Ubuntu Restricted  Sources. This sources includes codecs plugins for media files and adobe flash player.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

2.Install Google Chrome (Not Chromium)

Google Chrome is far better than firefox what I have experienced in my Ubuntu 11.10. Firefox makes my machine very slow so I switched to google chrome. In chromium web browser also there is some problems in unicode fonts .

3. Vlc player

Vlc is the most popular player and for me also it is must have application for me rather than searching codecs in default media Player.

sudo apt-get install vlc

4.Filezilla

The only ftp program I love is Filezilla. I frequently use this application for uploading and downloading files.

5.Skype

Skype became an important part of my day to day purpose for voice conversation with my friends.

sudo apt-get install skype

6.Pidgin

Pidgin is the open source application for messenger. It comes it Facebook,Msn,yahoo and others.

7. Eclipse IDE

For Me , I choose Eclipse IDE for Programming . It supports many languages. Mostly I use it for Php.

sudo apt-get install eclipse

8.Lamp

I have test many website locally before going through global. I prefer you to install lamp instead of installing php,mysql manually. Lamp works perfect for me.

sudo tasksel Then choose Lamp-Server from dialogue box.

9.Gimp

Gimp is open source photo editing software altenative to Photoshop.

sudo apt-get install gimp

10.Vim Editor

Vim is editor for terminal only. Without Vim Edit vi commands behave strange in terminal. If never forget this tiny application in my any version of ubuntu.

sudo apt-get install vim-nox
