Recently, I came across a hoax in Facebook which claims that one guy stared at the fire charcoals for 2-3 minutes, and the heat melted contact lens he was wearing. Some message claims that standing clone BBQ fire with lens cause lens to melt and leads to permanent blindness. The full message reads like this;

 Important Information :
A 21 year old guy had worn a pair of contact lenses during a barbecue party.(An event or meal at which food is cooked outdoors over an open grill or fire)
While barbecuing he stared at the fire charcoals continuously for 2-3 minutes.
After a few minutes, he started to scream for help and moved rapidly, jumping up and down.
No one in the party knew why he was doing this?

Then he admitted into the Hospital, the doctor said he’ll be blind permanently because of the contact lenses that he had worn.
Contact lenses are made by plastics, and the heat from the charcoal melted
his contact lenses.

DO NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES WHERE OVERHEATING AND FLAMES ARE CONCERNED…. OR
WHILE COOKING…!

Friends if u feel the information is important, Please pass this message to
All your near & dear ones.

But the truth is, your face would burn before lens. This hoax has been spreading since 1967 but with different stories, more information can be found on haox slayer which was published in 2006. Event after a research by organization like OSHA, FDA no proof of contact lens melting was found. Contact lens will melt only if it is in direct contact with fire. This type of message is called chain-message and was popular in emails, myspace during the time when they were popular since facebook is popular now it has landed on facebook currently.

These types of hoax message is accompanied by “Important” and “share/pass this message,” any message with this is actually a hoax. Previously, “How to Detect Hidden Camera in Trial Room?” was the also widespread hoax in Facebook.
